Nikon produces great glass and this is no exception but forget about FX sensored cameras or similar pricing in regards to Canons version of this lens.

I find the lense very usable. It’s a very fun lense at the 10mm length.

Why would I sacrifice the quality, accuracy and reliability and get an off brand? If you plan on keeping your camera for several years stay with Nikon. This is a great lens and the Tokina won’t be as sharp, reliable or accurate. My philosophy is to get the best I can and after some bad experiences with non Nikon brands I am just going to try my best to stick with Nikon since I have a Nikon camera. It will pay for itself after a year or two.

I did my research on this lens from the day it was in talk of coming out. When it came out, daily I would look for reviews because I was planning to get the 12-24mm f/4. Majority of the reviews were by amatuers or hobbyist (spell check).

In summary, they didnt know how to use a wide lens (that is the main problem for anyone that can’t use anything from 8mm-35mm). Other say the construction of the lens differ. Well that is true but for people that take care of their lens and not looking to drop it, you would be fine but still that reeason this dumb.

Here is my professional summary from a professional photographer. I brought this lens to complete my “all purpose travel kit”…lol. I have the 10-24, 24-70, and 70-300. What else do you need besides for Nikon to come out with a lens that shoot 10-24 at 2.8 and lower.

For now with that, you can just invest in the 12-24mm f/2.8 if you can. I don’t have that lens yet but soon I will if the 10-24 at 2.8 or less doesn’t come out.

People would say “what about low light?” I would say use a flash. Others would say “what about situations in which you can’t use a flash?” I would say use primes because with primes you can get f 2.8 to 1.4 autofocus and the results are great. I have a few primes and I am not selling them.

Anyways, 10-24mm….great investment. I shoot models with it, landscape, and soon other things. Great investment and it’s SHARP.

In final, if you know how to use a wide angle…..using this super wide lens will be a walk in the park. If you don’t, learn or ask a real professional the main reasons for wide etc.

Gran inversión e it’ SOSTENIDO de s.

EDIT 6.4.09: This lens is dropping in price – its down to 815 at J&R today, so I would recommend that you consider holding off on purchasing this until the price decreases stop and stabilize. The quick decreases in price clearly suggest low demand for this new Nikon lens. Also note that as of this week, the Tokina 11-16 Tokina AT-X116PRDXN AT-X PRO DX 11-16mm Ultra-wide Angle Lens for Nikon will be back in stock at most retailers, including amazon – you should be able to get it for 599 + tax. I am going to get one asap to test.

**********

I bought this and the sigma 10-20 Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras (which sells for about 1/2 the price) and planned to compare them and then decide which one to keep. I didnt consider the Nikon 12-24 because I prefer the extra 2mm at the wide end more than the 20-24mm. After comparing them head to head there is no way the image quality of the Nikon is twice as good as the Sigma in order to justify double the price. It’s better, but not twice-as-good better. Also, I actually feel like the Nikon doesn’t really have a better build than the Sigma, and the Nikon hisses a little when zoomed out to 24mm (may be my sample copy). For what its worth, the Nikon is made in China, and the Sigma in Japan.

Note that my needs for a wide angle are merely to take pictures to show family and friends and create fun pictures I like to look at. I’m not a pixel peeper nor am i making large prints. I dont make money from my photos. If you do, then you may likely have a different incentive to pay the premium for the Nikon or even consider other more expensive options (14-24mm perhaps?).

While I’m not averse to spending money on camera gear, I like to get value for money. The 105mm vr for 900 is value for money. The 35mm 1.8 is value for money. Buying the 10-24 for the current price makes me feel cheated. If it were 250 less, it may have been a harder decision.

Apparently Sigma are releasing a new 10-20 with 3.5 constant aperture this summer – if you can wait, it may well be worth considering. Its meant to be priced in between the Sigma and the Nikon. If you can wait, it may also be worth considering the Tokina 11-16 2.8 (once it is back in stock, but there are reports of defective units in the past, so I dont know if its worth it).

In conclusion: I’m returning the Nikon and Sigma and will wait for the new Sigma and/or Tokina to see if they give me more bang for the buck.

Hope this was helpful! Cheers, MNM
